Mallow Utd A 2 Lakewood Athletic A 2

In the first game of the season, Lakewood visited last years league
runners up in what proved to be a fiercely competitive match. The
visitors were under pressure from the off as Mallow established
themselves in the game. This resulted in the opening goal after 8
minutes when the striker managed to round the defender just inside the
box and neatly lob the now stranded keeper. Further pressure resulted in
a second goal not long after as the ball was put into the far bottom
corner. A third goal looked sure to follow but for a spectacular save by
first half keeper Luke Davis who at full stretch managed to put ball
wide of the post.

A calming team talk at half time resulted in a rejuvenated Lakewood
coming out after the break. Mallow were caught napping as Lakewood
passed their way through the home team to allow Tadhg O’Tuathaig to take
a shot, the rebound fell nicely for Ross McCarthy to slot into the far
corner. Well done Ross, great goal on your club début. Spurred on from
this, it was Lakewoods turn to apply the pressure. This saw team captain
Kerry William running at the defence and breaking free down the left
wing to get one on one with the keeper to calmly put it into the far
corner. A trade mark goal for Kerry. The remainder of the second half
saw Mallow working in Lakewoods half but the visitors catching them on
the break, Tadhg was unlucky not to get on the score sheet after a
certain goal was deflected wide by a Mallow defender. Lakewoods first
point of the campaign was maintained due to some great saves by second
half keeper Bradley Keane whose best save came from a free kick destined
for the top corner. Point gained or 2 points lost? Fair result all in
all but the team spirit to come from 2 nil down was great to see. Thanks
to Diarmuid O’Keeffe, who played a blinder, from the U13’s, who came to
give us 12 players.
