The Club is delighted to welcome today’s Sport Capital Programme announcement by the government in which Lakewood Athletic was allocated €142,000 towards the provision of a new full sized floodlit all weather pitch. The club is a constituent club of John A. Wood Limited Sports and Social Club who made the formal application on our behalf.
Club Chairman, Joe Dillon, commented: “The new all weather pitch will provide a much needed facility on the west side of Cork that will allow Lakewood to keep up its impressive rate of growth and success on the field. Drawing in players from across all ages, genders and social groups, Lakewood has over 500 playing members but our continued growth to serve our community has been hampered by a reliance on grass based pitches that are often compromised during the winter. We are delighted with this announcement and thank the government for this important grant which is an enormous step forward in the project.”
The club would like to recognise the strong support given to this project by our local Dail representatives, Minister Michael Creed TD and Aindrias Moynihan TD. We also would like to thank the Football Association of Ireland (FAI), who have already committed €150,000 to the project. The club would also like to recognise those members and parents who contributed to our ‘Lakewood Patron’ and ‘Friends of Lakewood’ fundraising scheme as well as the members of the club at all levels who assisted the Development Committee with this application.
