It took extra time for Lakewood to finally kill off the stubborn challenge of neighbours Strand Utd and progress to the next round of the local cup. Leading 1-0 at half time through captain Fionn OSheas good finish Lakewood were not totally on their game and sure enough a dogged Strand found themselves 2-1 up 15 mins into the second half following some really sloppy Lakewood play. It took an equaliser from Jack Mellerick to force extra time and suddenly as if a light had been switched on Lakewood turned up with Conor Eagles thundering into the game and Jack along with Adam O’Sullivan flying on the wings, 3 goals in the first period finished the game as a contest. Jack and Conor combined for Fionn to force home his second. Conor then finished beautifully in a one on one and when Jack’s neat ball put Conor through he was taken down in the box and Fionn’s resultant penalty was unstoppable as he completed his hat trick. Nathan Davis and Diarmuid Ward shut up shop at the back and Richard Cullinane and Liam Linehan added to the barrier in midfield as Strand ran out of ideas and Lakewood comfortably saw out the remaining minutes for 5-2.
