Glin Celtic 3 Lakewood 3 aet Glin win 3-1 on pens
Heartbreak for Lakewood in last 64 of FAI Junior Cup.
Lakewood travelled to Glin Rovers (Limerick) on Sunday afternoon to take on Limerick side Glin Rovers. Lakewood started well and had the majority of the possession. Gavin OFlaherty hit the post with a long range effort before Jonny Higgins scored from 25yards with a fine strike that went in off the post.
Lakewood were well on top at this stage and should have went further in front when Kenny Murphy squared the ball to Arseni Lamenov who somehow put it over the bar. An excellent first half performance from the away side.
Lakewood came flying out of the blocks in the second half and scored in the first minute, a great passing move with Arseni Lamenov rounding two players before playing a defense splitting pass to Kenny Murphy who slotted it home. Glin came back strong in the next 20 mins and put some pressure on, they pulled one back scoring a cross to the back post where it was headed in. Glin leveled 5 minutes later finishing from close range after a scramble in the box.
Lakewood regained control game again but could not break down the physical Glin side.
In Extra time Glin seemed to be happy to let Lakewood keep possession while defending and trying to play on the break.
With 2 mins remaining Even Dodd finished at the front post but unfortunately lakewood conceded with the final touch of the ball when Glin scored from a corner.
Glin won 3-1 on penalties.
All 19 Lakewood players who traveled should be proud of themselves. It was a great display of football and they will feel hard down by not to be in the hat for the next round.
Best of luck to Glin Rovers, thanks for the food provided afterwards in Geogeans Bar.
