U12 Premier –

Lakewood 2 Carrigaline 3.

Epic struggle in this tie today. In the opening half, Lakewood had a slight edge in terms of play. Carrigaline exploited a defensive mix up to open the scoring but we came back to level 1-1 very soon after with a goal fashioned from the skill and determination of Danny Miskella and Sean Richmond, who hit home. Just before half time Carrigaline hit us on a counter attack to go ahead again.

Playing against a strong breeze in the second half, Lakewood had spells of dominance, capped off with a fine free kick outside the box by Johnny Galvin that went straight to the top corner. Level again,  most of the large attendance thought a draw was in prospect. With 3 minutes left, the ref blew his whistle to award a free kick around half way. The free was taken (not immediately) and while the ball is in air the ref with his back to the play blows the whistle again, to indicate that free is to be taken, not knowing it has been. Both sides stopped play on whistle (some thinking an offside was called) but meawhile the ball dribbles into net and the ref awards a goal to Carrigaline.   In our view in the circumstances, the free should have been reset. The result will likely stand, however aggrieved Lakewood may feel, having “played the whistle”. Nonetheless, really strong, impressive performance from Lakewood, even depleted by injury. It continues a pattern of impressive performances.
