U14 Girls Cup: Leeside 0 – 2 Lakewood Athletic (AET)
Scorer Heidi O Sullivan x2
In what was a pulsating affair between two evenly matched teams over 90 minutes Lakewood ran out eventually winners scoring 2 at the feet of Heidi O’Sullivan in the final 4 minutes of extra time.
Both sides had their chances during the regulation 70 minutes but were denied by excellent defence and goal keeping in Grainne Guest for Leeside and in Aoife Barrett for Lakewood.
The foundation for this victory was again built from a resolute defence partnership in the centre between Sadbh McGoldrick and Niamh O’Shea ably flanked by Emily Shanahan and the tenacious Maedbh McGoldrick who together stopped attack after attack and slowed down the momentum of excellent wingers on the Leeside team Amy Gettings and Ava Lotty.
Through the middle Lakewood’s engine room of Holly Kierans and Sophie O Connell, flanked by Laura Hill and Ciara Taheny again performed admirably and were really up against it, the impressive Emma O’Neill and the Leeside wingers driving on at every opportunity.
Up top Lucy Cronin, Nicole Connolly, Katie Lee and Heidi O’Sullivan put in a huge game against a resolute Leeside defence spear headed by Ciara Golden. The first goal came on the 86th minute following strong running from Katie Lee whose shot broke in the box and was not held by the Leeside keeper, Heidi O’Sullivan was on hand to direct it in to the net at close range. The second was a superb on the turn strike 20 yards from Heidi O Sullivan who saw her shot fly in to the top right hand corner
Lakewood march on to a Cup semi-final against Bandon this Saturday kick off at 6:30 in Lakewood was a great sense of belief and confidence in their abilities.
